Restriction On Use Of Research Fund
The Dental Research Foundation’s research fund of $160,000 was a capital sum which was not available for grants: only the income from the invested capital could be spent, Mr J. W. Reed, a member of the foundation’s board, said yesterday.
A Supporter of Dr R. G. Every, formerly a practising dentist, who is investigating man’s aggressiveness, suggested at a seminar on Saturday that the foundation’s funds could be used to support Dr Every’s work. Dr Every said that he had not applied because dental experts would not come to see his work. Mr Reed said that the foundation had offered a year ago to pay Dr Every’s expenses to enable him to travel from Auckland to address the dental and medical faculties at Otago University. Dr Every had' declined. The foundation could do nothing about a research grant until it received an application from Dr Every. It had to hear from him about his research and his needs. So far, all it had to go on was hearsay. ' . Mr Reed, who is also president of the Canterbury branch of the Dental Association, said he was very sympathetic to Dr Every’s case, and he had attended the seminar held at the university on Saturday. He said that the dental re-
search fund was built up by members of the profession, together with drug companies and dental equipment suppliers. Its purpose was to provide an income to be used for research; virtually in perpetuity. Mr Reed said that six grants had already been made to research workers, and he estimated that there might be $4OOO still available.
