EMBASSY “SIEGE”
Police Eject Owner
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Dec. 13.
The “siege” of the Turkish Embassy residence in Canberra was raised last night when police officers executed a Supreme Court interim injunction and ejected the owner, Mrs S. A. Newland, from the house. The injunction was granted to the Federal Attorney-Gen-eral, Mr N. H. Bowen, by Mr Justice Fox in a special hearing of the Supreme Court. It restrained Mrs Newland from occupying or continuing to occupy or otherwise violate the premises known as 3A Mugga Way, Forrest, until a further hearing on December 20. The counsel for the Commonwealth, Mr G. D. Needham, Q.C., told the court that the Australian Ambassador to Turkey, Rear-Admiral Sir Alan McNicol), had been called to the Turkish Foreign Office in Ankara. He ha J been told that unless the injunction was granted, there was likely to be a diplomatic incident. Mrs Newland began the siege on December 9.
