Kaiapoi Port Use

The Kaiapoi Borough Council will investigate the feasibility of further trade from the Kaiapoi port, it decided at its monthly meeting.

Cr C. T. Williams said there were various types of equipment and ships which could be suitable for efficient handling of cargo and prove an economic success.

“Social factors are involved, such as the type of competition of trade and conditions on the Wellington waterfront. Use of containers is a fashionable word and has roots in the social factor as much as in the efficiency of operation," he said.

As it is the beginning of the council term he urged the members to give consideration to preparation of a comprehensive report. It was decided that the harbour committee would investigate all aspects of possible resumption of shipping in the harbour.
