NURSERY SCHOOL
Proposal For Avonside
The possibility of establishing a day nursery at the Avonside Girls’ High School for children of staff members was discussed at the monthly meeting of the school's board of governors. The headmistress (Miss M. P. Stevenson) said that it had been strongly recommended that such a centre be established. At present married women with children under five were working full time and part time on the staff and, from time to time, calls were made on the services of former staff members and other persons with small children. In all cases the teachers had found that managing a home and family had not prevented them from doing effective work in teaching, but proper provision for the care of their children was a constant worry. It was suggested that a centre be started next year in a small way at the school. In Davis House facilities could readily be brought up to the required standard at no great cost.
The salary of the necessary staff would be met by the parents of the children enrolled at the centre but a minimum number would be required to make it economically feasible. It was decided by the board that the existing sub-commit-tee of three board members and Miss Stevenson approach the Department of Education with an exploratory statement on the proposal. Some members felt that even if the staff were paying to run the centre, a foundation grant would be necessary to start it.
It was also agreed that such a centre would not interfere with the nursery school running at present.
