CUSTOMS TRIAL
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. The case for the defence was opened in the Supreme Court, Wellington, today in the trial of two men and two limited companies on charges of forgery and uttering. On trial are William Bacon and Company, Ltd (34 counts of forgery and 34 of uttering): Herbert John Wootton, aged 45. managing director: and Leslie Edward Broom.
aged 41, branch manager (each 36 counts of forgery and 36 counts of uttering): and R. Green, Ltd (two counts of uttering and two of forgery).
The trial is taking place i before Mr Justice Roper and a jury of 12. Mr D. Beattie, Q.C., with jhim Mr G. L. Evans, is appearing for the two com[panics and Wootton. Broom is represented by Mr R. j Stacey. ! Mr J. H. C. Larsen, with him Mr J. D. Rabone, are appearing for the Crown. In his opening address, Mr Beattie said he would call a ■ handwriting expert of long experience who would advise (that the writing of the questioned signatures did not ) allow a finding that they were written by either Wootton or Broom.
