Stop At U.S. Station When a United States Navy ski-equipped Hercules landed at Plateau Sta-. tion last Friday it was welcomed by the eight Americans who had wintered there and by 11 Japanese. Three days earlier the Japanese Antarctic research programme traverse party reached the American base while on a round-trip from their Showa Base on the coast to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. They had stopped at. the base for a four-day rest, for vehicle maintenance and refuelling. The flagpole at the tiny station had the American and Japanese flags flying as well as the flag of the United States Antarctic Research Programme, and three Japanese snow tractors were parked alongside. The Americans and the Japanese unloaded the 3001 b of mail and 1001 b of fresh provisions, carrying the provisions into the station quickly before they froze. The temperature was 45deg below zero.
