65 BY SHAW
Course Record Equalled GV.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE. In heat of 103 degrees, and with high winds swirling dust over the drought-stricken Royal Queensland course, the young Australian golfer, R. Shaw, equalled the course record of 65 in the opening round of the $15,000 Dunlop international tournament yesterday.
Shaw, aged 23, with recent wins in the New Zealand P.G.A. and the Spanish Open, had a three-under-par 33 on the way out and came home in 32. One of the longest hitters in the game, he leads a topclass field of 91 players by four strokes. The second best scores were by the Australians, B. Devlin, who has not shown the form recently of his great rounds in America two years ago, and B. Bent, on 69. SPLENDID FINISH T. Jacklin (Britain), who was square with the card after 15 holes, finished with a birdie, eagle, birdie for a 70. The defending champion, R. Stanton (Australia), withdrew because of illness but later changed his mind and was allowed to tee off at the tail-end of the field with P. Townsend (Britain). Stanton struggled through for a par 74, one better than Townsend. The leading New Zealand players are J. M. Lister, 72,
and B. T. Boys, 73. Another New Zealander, D. L. Machray, took 82. TROUBLE WITH ANTS The match committee had to make two unusual rulings. One gave a birdie to J. Vaughan (United States), who had to play a shot standing on an ants’ nest. He [played two balls—one on the nest, which gave him a six, ; the other away from the ants, ,giving him a four. The committee took an hour to decide he could claim the ! birdie four. This gave him a I two-under 72.
The committee were called ; again when the Australian, E. i Hartvigsen, drove into a man- ! grove mud flat lining a river, but by the time the committee arrived the tide had floated the ball. Hartvigsen was allowed to lift and drop without penalty under a casual water rule. Leading scores were:— 65—R. Shaw (New South i Wales). I 69—8. Bent (New South •Wales). B. Devlin (New South I Wales). 70— A. Jacklin (Britain). 71— P. Connel (New South .Wales). 1. Woodward (New (South Wales), I. Sharpe (New (South Wales).
72 — J. Vaughan (United I States), P. Thomson (Victoria). J. Lister (New Zealand). 73 — L. Wilson (Queensland), M. Kelly (New South Wales), K. Nagle (New’ South Wales). B. Boys (New Zealand), B. Green (Victoria). J. Sullivan (New South Wales). G. Brewer (United States).
