Parliamentary Pay
Sir, —I think Mr Cracknell, the Social Credit member for Hobson, is to be congratulated. His was the only voice raised against the salary increases. If, as he stated, he found the remuneration adequate to live on why could not the others? It makes one wonder whether they are in Parliament to serve the people, as they would have us believe, or whether they are in Parliament for what they can get out of it.—Yours, etc.
CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE.
November 13. 1968. Sir, —The Social Credit leader, Mr Cracknell, apparently will accept the increase in Parliamentary salaries and tax-free allowances in spite of the fact he spoke against them in the House. Some people would say this was unfairly soliciting votes; others might suggest it was a determined attempt by Social Credit to fool the taxpayers.—Yours, etc., BLIND FAITH. November 13, 1968.
Sir, —In spite of what “A. B. Cedarian” says in his diversion this morning, Sir Leslie Munro’s claim that he cannot live on his Parliamentary income is unreasonable, even considering that the standard of living of M.P.s is expected to be a little higher than average. It would be more reasonable to say that he does not think that it is equal to the demands of the job, which is altogether a different matter. —Yours, etc., SOPHOCLES. November 13, 1968.
