Trout Fishing
Sir, —Fishermen at the Ashburton River mouth have brought these new fishing regulations on themselves. I have fished at Ashburton for many years and know what goes on, and it is not much use anyone writing letters to the paper trying to make out that these new regulations are not needed. With the amount of fish taken that are foul-hooked, over-limit bags, rows on the beach, and rows in the camp, and total catches of about 80 salmon a year, it might have been better if the society had closed the river altogether. The methods used on this river have been bad for years and finally have been brought to a head by two or three very poor fishermen. 1 am as much to blame as anyone. We have brought it on ourselves. Now let us put up with it like real men.—Yours, etc., J.R. November 12, 1968. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed., “The Press.”]
