Unjustified Increases “Not Tolerated”

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 13. Unjustified increases in prices would not be tolerated, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) told Parliament today—after Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Riccarton) had asked him what action he proposed to take to ensure they did not occur.

Mr Marshall said the Government’s policies to prevent unjustified price increases included the ecouragement of competition and plentiful supply: price Control for monopolies; subsidised goods and goods in short supply; and inspection of prices and increases.

Wages rates and devaluation had an effect on the price structure, he said. Increased costs which were justified had to reflect in the over-all price structure. In the last year, the department had received 859 complaints of unjustified price increases—l9o of which were found to be unjustified, and a reduction secured, Mr Marshall said.
