No Call On Firemen
The Fire Service Council’s ruling that fire brigades would not be called on to deal with civil disturbances unless there was a national emergency was in line with the board’s policy of many year’s standing, Mr W. R. Campbell, the chairman, said at the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board’s meeting last evening. The only time the brigade would be called in was when the Mayor read the Riot Act, in which case the call had to be answered, Mr Campbell said. This had been discussed with the police and civic authorities some years ago and they had agreed that the brigade would not be called on in any other circumstances.
