Low Fares Board’s Aim

The new Christchurch Transport Board would try to maintain fares and rates at the lowest possible level, the board’s chairman (Mr J. R. Smith) said on Monday. He said many factors beyond the board's control sometimes forced it to .increase fares or rates. The board made such increases with great reluctance. “At the present time the board has, without doubt, the finest fleet of buses in any centre in New Zealand, and I am pleased to say it has the lowest operating costs and the lowest fares of the four main centres,” said Mr Smith “Our aim will be to maintain this position.” Mr Smith was unanimously re-elected chairman of the board, and Mr S. E. Boanas was elected deputy-chairman. Mr Boanas was elected chair man of the finance committee and Mr P. D. Dunbar chairman of the works and traffic committee.
