Methodists To Devise Doctrine Of Wealth

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, November 11.

After a heated debate the annual conference of the Methodist Church decided tonight to formulate a Christian doctrine of wealth.

During the debate the Rev. I. C. E. Ramage, of Auckland, said: “There are some of us who have come dose to wondering whether personal wealth might not be some form of robbery.” He was speaking for a resolution moved by the Rev. J. G. Hayhurst Opotiki, that: “The public questions committee formulate a Christian doctrine of wealth, having due regard to both the Biblical foundations of the Christian faith and the contemporary social and political realities.” “The church needs a doctrine of wealth,” said Mr Hayhurst. “It is ethically sound and there are some of us who are concerned at what is happening in the world.” Querying the need for the doctrine, the Rev. W. Parker, of Auckland, said: “Why not

read about it in the Bible? It is mentioned a thousand times.”
