Home-made Pistols (N.Z. Pru* 4«aetaHan> AUCKLAND. Nov. 8. The Newmarket police, in a Guy Fawkes’ Day sequel, have called on parents throughout Auckland for help in the confiscation and banning of a home-made pistol. Inventive-minded children have contrived a firecracker weapon which is potentially dangerous. A ball bearing fired from one of these weapons went near to blinding or killing an 11-y ear-old.
Several of the pistols shown today were a vast improvement on the usual youthful weapons.
The firecracker pistols are single-shot affairs, but the one that fired the ball bearing had a touch of James Bond cunning. The one-centimetre ball smoothly fitted a long barrel for maximum velocity. Abbrasive match-box strips provided an effective “trigger” mechanism.
The police say the weapons are in common use in “gang wars.”
