Gasworks Fire

Fire had a fierce hold of the derelict Lyttelton Gasworks in Gladstone Quay late last night.

Within five minutes of the arrival of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade, flames leaping from the windows and roof of the old building were quenched and the dampening down was completed soon after.

The alarm was given at 10.30 p.m. by Senior-Sergeant P. J. Alty, whose attention was drawn to the billows of smoke. The flames soon burst through sections of the roof as sheets of roofing exploded with the heat. The fire was confined to the upstairs section of what was once the office accommodation. Gas production was discon-

tinued at the works at the end of March. The old brick buildings on the site are awaiting demolition.

Pedestrian Injured.—James Turpin, aged 66, of 509 Madras Street, was admitted to Christchurch Hospital with head injuries he received when he was struck by a car in Colombo Street, near the Christchurch Women’s Hospital at 10.35 p.m. yesterday. His condition was repurted to be comfortable.
