40 FIGHT FIRES
The Christchurch Fire Brigade had eight fire engines and 40 firemen fighting two fires last night. Three engines from Headquarters Station and one each from the Sydenham and Woolston stations were sent to the fire in the yard of the Williamson Construction Company, off Montreal Street, at 10.10 p.m. At 10.24 p.m., two engines from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade and one from the Woolston Station were sent to a fire in the old Lyttelton gasworks. One engine from the St Albans station was sent to Headquarters on standby in case another fire broke out in the area covered by the Headquarters and Woolston fire stations.
