Fast Trials At Riccarton

An outstanding trial over ground by the New Zealand Cup topweight, Proud Chief, and fast runs over six

furlongs by the Stew-

ards, rivals, Shipmast- • er and Aeolian, and the New Zealand Derby ■ favourite, Royal Tudor, marked the final gallops for New Zealand - Cup Day at Riccarton ■ yesterday.

Another gallop which created more than a passing interest was a four-sided trial between the Welcome Stakes - rivals, Tony Kaye, Kaye * Royal, Daryl’s Joy, and • Euripydies. The honours in this half-

mile, which began at the New Zealand Cup starting point in ; the five-furlong shute, were - won convincingly by Tony Kaye. The course proper, with the trestles out 40 feet, and the plough, on which all the fast work took place, both provided firm footing but the trialists had a stiff easterly breeze to contend v-ith in the run home. Proud Chief, in the hands of his trainer, T. J. McKee, was partnered by Noir Filou (McCutcheon), His Lordship (Smith) and Royal Encounter (M. McCann) in a 10-furlong trial on the course proper. Royal Encounter took over the pacemaking right from the start His Lordship ran his stablemate "lose and Noir Filou and Proud Chief dropped a length or two behind going to the half mile. Proud Chief was two lengths last starting the run home and two furlongs out Royal Encounter surrendered his lead to His Lordship, which was joined almost immediately by Noir Filou. COING AWAY A stride or two later McKee sent Proud Chief after the others. He joined them outside the furlong and was going away by a length from His Lordship at the finish. Noir Filou finished at His Lordship’s girth and Royal Encounter was beaten off. Proud Chief bettered 2min 13sec for the mile and a quarter, ran the last nine furlongs in Imin 58 l-ssec, and his last half mile in a fraction under Slsec. Shipmaster (Mein) and Aeolian (Low) showed a high standard of fitness for tomorrow’s sprint by running six furlongs

on the plough together in Imin Ifisec. They came home from the half mile in 48sec and sped over the last three furlongs in 35 4-ssec.

Royal Tudor (Bowry) had Empyreus (Harris) as a companion in a similar trial on the same track. They ran home together in Imin 16 4-ssec, the last half mile in 49 l-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec.

Tony Kaye (Mein) and Daryl’s Joy (B. Brown) were slightly behind Euripydies (A. Eastwood) and Kaye Royal (McCutcheon) soon after starting their half mile from the fivefurlong chute, but Tony Kaye won the gallop running away by two lengths from Daryl’s Joy and Euripydies. Kaye Royal, which pulled a fore and hind shoe during the trial, was three lengths further back. The trial could only be timed for the last three furlongs, which took 38 2-ssec.

Blind Date (A. Eastwood) was much too good for his New Zealand Cup rivals. Lady Velvet (R. McCann) and Contradict (Mein). This nine-furlong gallop, run in Imin 59 4-ssec, the last half mile in 51sec, turned into a procession over the final stages. Blind Date pulled away to beat Lady Velvet by six lengths, and Contradict was last in a much longer gap.

KEEN GALLOP Mammoth (F. Skelton) showed his usual keenness in a gallop over ground on the course proper with Royal Master (E. McCann). Mammoth led his Riccarton-trained New Zealand Cup rival by a length after nine furlongs in 2min 1 3-ssec, the last half mile in 52 2-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Weenell (B. Brown) and her stablemate and Stewards’ rival, Colorado Boy (McCutcheon), ran the last four of five furlongs on the course proper in 50 2-ssec. Colorado Boy, which was ridden out with the whip, was shading the filly at the finish, but she had given him a good start when they broke away. On the same track Floodlit (McCutcheon) and Togo (Selwood) ran half a mile together in 50 2-ssec. Master Brynn (Coulter) and King’s Charge (Mein) took 2min 3 4-ssec for their nine furlongs on the course proper, and came home from the half mile in Hamua (McCutcheon) worked more keenly than on Tuesday to beat his stablemate, Nuihau (Tucker), by two and a half lengths at the end of nine furlongs in Imin 59 l-ssec. They ran the last half mile in 54 4-ssec.

Pango impressed with her fitness by speeding over her first two furlongs in 25 l-ssec, the first three in 37 3-ssec. and completing six on the plough in Imin 14 3-ssec.

Every Post (Beck) led Shoshone (McCutcheon) by two lengths and Spanish Fox (Quayle) by three after seven furlongs in Imin 29 3-ssec, the last three in 38 l-ssec.

HARD HELD Fair Alex, the "star” trialfist on Tuesday, was hard-held by F. H. Skelton throughout six furlongs on the plough. He took Imin 21 2-ssec for the dis-

tance, 53sec for the last half mile and 38 2-ssec for his last three furlongs. Red Chips (M. McCann) and Royal Blue (Stammers) ran the last four of five furlongs on the course proper together in 51 l-ssec. Palamos (McCutcheon) was shading Jovial Friar (A. Eastwood) at the end of their seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 31 l-ssec, the half half mile in 51 l-ssec and the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Harold Bank (Tucker) and David William (Donaldson) did not exert themselves while running nine furlongs on the course in 2min 6sec. They took 54sec for the last half mile. Willie’s Pride, which is to run in the Derby instead of the Spring Plate, ran his solo half mile on the course proper in 51 4-ssec. He had his racerider, W. H. Beck, up. Eastern Gold (Mackie) and Flash Red (Sanderson) took 50 3-ssec for their half mile on the course. Gold Nip (M. McCann) and Inns of Court (Moir) ran in from the half mile together in Time and Tide (Moir) led Chilli Bean (Stammers) by

three-quarters of a length after seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 28 2-ssec. They ran the first three in 37sec and the opening four in 50 l-ssec. Cantostan (McCutcheon) and Partner (Gallery) took 53sec for the last four of seven furlongs and came home from the three in 40 2-ssec.

Pick-a-Back (Gullery) ran her solo half mile on the course in 50 2-ssec and came the last three in 38 l-ssec. Stevedore (McCutcheon) was three-quarters of a length ahead of Goudhurst (E. Their last half mile took 50 l-ssec and the final three furlongs 37 3-ssec. Seminole (M. McCann) was a neck ahead of Kiowa (F. Skelton) and Listening Post (Mrs Clutterbuck) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 29 2-ssec, the last half mile in 50 3-ssec and the final three in 38sec. They ran home in Imin 16 4-ssec, came the last half mile in 50 l-ssec and the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec.

Waterfront (Lawson) and Alberta (Sanderson) ran in from the half mile together in 50 l-ssec. Sailing Home (Low) was out by two lengths from Narcotic (Hunt) ending six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec on the plough. The pace quickened over the last three in 36 3-ssec.
