Break-through For Bowlers
(New Zealand freit dseeeiatton) AUCKLAND. J. N. S. Flett, player-manager of the New Zealand bowls team which left yesterday for a six«week tour of South Africa, sees the trip as a break-through for the sport and a step in the building of the game’s image.
“Everyone has the idea that bowling clubs are homes for the aged and infirm,” he said yesterday. “This is a very scientific, skilful game.”
The tour is the first by the New Zealand bowlers apart from the Commonwealth Games and the world championships. “Nothing but good will come from it," Flett said. “There is no reason why South Africa should not make a reciprocal tour, or that Australia and Rhodesia should not come her." The “-first match will be played on Monday against Western Transvaal at Krugersdorf. There will be tests against South Africa at Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, in addition to an unofficial test against Rhodesia in Salisbury.
The other members of the New Zealand team are P. E. B. Jones (Auckland), P. C. Skoglund (Palmerston North), C. Simon (Wellington), W. R, Wilkinson (Christchurch), G. H. Jolly (Dunedin), W. D. Seott (Central Otago), and H. H. J. Robson (Auckland).
