Fountain Design

The general design of a pedestrian piazza, which will have a fountain, seats, trees, and wrought iron railings has been approved by the donor, Mr R. H. Stewart The fountain will be on the triangular area in High Street opposite the Bank of New Zealand, and will feature a wall with cascading water, a pool, and the trees and seats.

When the scheme is approved by the City Council the area will be paved with Halswell stone.

Mr P. J. Beaven, who designed the setting for the Christchurch Civic Trust, said yesterday that once the council had given its approval, a limited design competition would be opened among the eight best sculptors in New Zealand for the design of the fountain itself. T
