COUP IN PERU
Resistance To Junta (N.Z.P.A.-neuter—Copyright) LIMA, Peru. October 6. A massive wave of resistance against the military junta which seized power on Thursday appeared to be taking shape today with students, workers and politicians voicing opposition to the overthrow of President Fernando Belaunde Terry. Riot police last night fired tear-gas to disperse anti-Gov-ernment demonstrations in Lima and other parts of the country and the powerful Peruvian Students’ Federation issued a communique refusing to recognise the revolutionary regime of MajorGeneral Juan Velasco Alvarado.
The communique called on labour unions and peasants to “fight through all possible means for a return to legality.”
About 30,000 sugar workers in the northern provinces of Lambayeque and La Libertad began a strike at midnight last night protesting against the Army-led coup. High-ranking officials of national organisation resigned and refused to collaborate with the new regime.
