insist that the first one should set the standard. If so. the standard is lamentably low. Even the title seems to have little point. Dominic McGooley, if he is the comic of the show, was given no more stature than that of an extra. Evidently he is meant to be portrayed as a mischievous old nuisance, but much more of his character will have to be sketched in before I can warm to him. He does have some of the qualities of both Steptoe senior and Alf Garnett, but a comedian needs more than that. He needs some funny lines, and in this respect the whole programme was undernourished. A few well-chosen Australain epithets like “Yuh mongrel” and exclamations
