Milford Visitors Relieved

Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, September 16. Nine persons stranded at Milford Sound since an avalanche blocked the Te Anau end of the Homer Tunnel on the Milford-Te Anau road on September 2 were flown out this morning.

An aeroplane flew 12 tourists out from the Milford Hotel two days after the avalanche struck, but today was the first time since then that the weather has cleared sufficiently for an aircraft to land at Milford.

There appears little hope of the tunnel being cleared for some time. Rain sleet, and snow were lashing the Homer Saddle area tonight Mr R. F. Wilson, a senior engineer with the Ministry of Works in Invercargill, said it was still not safe to send! men and machines to clear! the tunnel. “We sent a man in to have a look today. He retired pretty quickly. One avalanche has come down and there are several others just hanging,” he said. “It’s suicidal to send men in there now, and more snow is forecast. The situation is not very hopeful,” Mr Wilson said.
