Kingsford Smith
Sir, —I was interested to see the illustration this morning of Mr McWilliams, who was wireless operator on the epic flight of the Southern Cross. I was in Brisbane some few months ago and had the privilege of seeing the Southern Cross, and thought that the following facts might be of interest. The Southern Cross was reassembled and reconditioned by the R.A.A.F. boys at Mascot, Sydney, and they wanted to fly it to Brisbane but were refused permission. They had therefore to dismantle it and ship it to Brisbane, where it was again assembled, and it now stands on the very spot upon which Smithy and his crew landed at the end of the epic flight from England, on June 9, 1928, in the then unprecedented time of 83 hours 42 minutes. It is enclosed in a glass case, and is a worthy and treasured monument to a great man.—Yours, etc, TRAVELLER. September 13, 1968.
