PETITION TO SIR GEORGE MANNING and CITY COUNCILLORS Your Worship, 1968 has been especially designated as International Human Rights Year by the General Assembly of the United Nations in recognition of the 20th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 1968 has been endorsed, publicised and recognised as International Human Rights Year by the Government of New Zealand, which is also celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Women obtaining the vote in New Zealand. The United Nations and the New Zealand Government have given the lead in identifying 1968 as a commemorative year, where people should in some way advance the cause of Human Rights. It is therefore fitting that Christchurch recognises International Human Rights Year with a gesture designed to advance Human Rights in Christchurch. The Prime Minister, in a letter to the Canterbury Amalgamated Shop Assistants Union dated July 9th, said that—“ The Government fully supports the principle of equal remuneration between men and women workers for work of equal value.” In the interests of women’s rights, this petition urges the Christchurch City Council to adopt the following proposals:— 1— That the Christchurch City Council urge the Government to endorse the two covenants and the protocol on Human Rights adopted on December 16th, 1966, by the United Nations Organisation with particular emphasis on the stated principle of "equal remuneration for work of equal value.” (Article 7). 2 That the Council apply fully the principle of equal pay for equal work throughout the city of Christchurch administration. 3 That the Christchurch City Council urge this city to implement equal pay for equal work and to this end do business only with persons, firms and companies who stipulate that they, Where applicable, adopt the principle of equal pay for equal work. 4 Thatxthe Christchurch City Council advertise all employment vacancies in the General column of the newspapers, thereby inviting applications based on the job, in the same manner as the New Zealand Public Service. In addition to the Shop Assistants Union this petition is supported by the organisations and people hereinafter listed. / B. ALDERDICE, Secretary. P.O. Box 1914, Christchurch.
