Four Test Flights Of Mt Cook Plane
The Hawker-Siddeley 748 turbo-prop aircraft for Mount Cook Airlines had been test flown four times yesterday and two of the airline’s pilots in England were very happy with the aircraft, said a company spokesman in Christchurch yesterday.
He said that the information came from the airline's chief engineer (Mr G. E. Olliver) in a telephone call from Manchester yesterday. The only possible disruption to the 748 leaving Britain for its flight to New Zealand on time were two public holidays, the spokesman
said. Any such loss could be made up on the flight. As the aircraft has had capacity fuel tanks installed, the use of long-range tanks for the delivery flight will be unnecessary. The aircraft is due to land at Christchurch Airport at 3 p.m. on October 5. For its participation as a static exhibit in the Farnborough Air Show, the aircraft will have “New Zealand” painted above the Mount Cook Airlines sign and this will remain on for the delivery flight. On board the aircraft will be a spare Rolls-Royce jet engine and a considerable amount of spare parts.
