Casca Proves Best In Tight Finish

Casca came out on top In a tight four-sided finish to the Fairfield Hack Handicap nt Ashburton yesterday, Casca was the favourite In this, his third win, and his second this season, from J. R. Dowling's Wingatui stable. Mr P. S. Georgeson’s stocky Agricola gelding, a close relation of the brilliant Hush Money, moved from the middle of the field to reach a challenging position near the furlong, and won by a neck from We Hava Fun, which had the run of the race.

Herndale Lad came from behind the middle of the field for third half a neek back.

Derby last year but has struggled without success in less distinguished comfiany on several occasions since t was decided to call off that trip, won the Air New Zealand Improvers’ Handicap In a tight finish with Submerge and the favourite Acrobat. Walaroo won at hie first start as a two-year-old in Southland, but did not win again until yesterday. He it now raced on lehse by the Blccarton trainer, R. p. Register, and was ridden yesterday by G. W. Mein.

Walaroo was fourth starting the last half mile and after battling into a short lead close to home survived a late challenge from Submerge. Submerge was ■ one of the slowest away and it was late before he reached a challenging position. Acrobat challenged from a trailing position to reach a short lead early in the run home. He ran on gamoly under vigorous handling tor a close third. Starless was fourth In a gap of two lengths and a half.
