Legge In Top Form

Skilfully directed by the first five-eighths, L. G. Legge, and a more talented combination, Canterbury Colts beat South Canterbury Colts, 36-0, in the curtain-raiser at Lancaster Park yesterday. Canterbury’s eight tries were scored by R. W. Moore (2), Legge (2), I. Behmes, G. R. Wallis, G. Boot and G. Glackin. Legge also kicked a dropped goal, and Behrnes converted three of the tries and kicked a penalty goal. Legge was the dominant back of the match, which was featured by the general excellence of the Canterbury team, both as individuals and as a unit. Legge’s long punting when Canterbury played with the wind in the first half kept the home side on attack, and he combated the south-westerly in the second half with low touchfinders.

The big lock, C. Johnson, ensured Canterbury a majority of possession with his fine line-out work.

Playing with greater fire and purpose in the second half, Bay of Plenty scored a merited, 11-5, win over Wai-

kato at Whakatane. It was Bay of Plenty’s final match before its Ranfurly Shield challenge against Hawke’s Bay on September 21. For Waikato, F. S. Mara scored a try, converted by D. H. Pinfold. For Bay of Plenty, G. E. Moore scored a try and E. van der Leeden kicked the conversion and two penalties
