Church Union Discussion

Approval for the Joint Christchurch Committee of the Five Negotiating Churches to act as a committee of oversight, in areas where there was joint action and common use of buildings, was given by members of the Christchurch Presbytery at its monthly meeting last evening. The Rev. N. E. Campbell, convener of the presbytery’s ecumenical and church-union committee, said that the committee had noted the possibility of exploratory discussions with the Methodist and Congregational parishes in the Woolston district, and was interested in possible discussions and developments. Representatives of the negotiating churches had recently attended a meeting arranged by the Anglican Diocesan Church Union Committee to discuss joint action and church government. Another similar meeting had been arranged at the invitation of the Methodist Church and further discussion could possibly be held in the future on a regular basis, said Mr Campbell. Approval was given for the general-secretary of the National Council of Churches (the Rev. D. M. Taylor) to present a report on the fourth assembly of the World Council of Churches to the next meeting of the presbytery.
