Missionary Problems

The image of the Nineteenth Century missionary was still widely held in the countries from which missionaries came, the Rev. R. M. Boas told a meeting of the Friends of the Diocese of Polynesia. Mr Boas was formerly working in the Diocese of Montreal, Canada, and is now based in Lambasa, Fiji, in the Diocese of Polynesia. This image was the greatest problem facing the missionary. Mr Boas said. The word “mission” had many interpretations and it was necessary to dispel the confusion raised by these interpretations to gain the support of the dioceses supporting mission work. While in New Zealand he had asked many persons what they believed to be the meaning of missionary work and had received almost as many answers, he said.
