Lawry Hits Last, Winning Run
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. The Australian captain, W. M. Lawry, hit the final run of the English tour that signalled victory over a Rest of the World XI yesterday.
The Australians won by eight wickets—their eighth victory in the 26 first-class matches. The Rest of the World XI collapsed for 167 in its second innings before the aggressive bowling of A. N. Connolly
and D. Renneberg, who each captured three wickets. Australia was set 101 runs for victory, and the West Indian, W. W. Hall, in a furious spell of new-ball bowling, removed K. D. Walters (1) and R. J. Inverarity (6). But I. R. Redpath and Lawry, in a magnificent partnership of 88, clinched victory for the tourists. Redpath fittingly engineered the strike so that Lawry should hit the winning run. Scores: Rest of World XI 219/7 dec. and 107 (Renneberg 3/23, Connolly 3/18), Australia 226 and 101/2 (Redpath 56 not out, Lawry 30 not out).
