Tougher Games For Tennis Pros

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK. The Australians, R. Laver and A, D. Roche, are among the professionals who face tougher matches in the fourth round of the men’s singles at the first United States open tennis championships today.

Two of the most attractive matches in the last eight have been professional versus professional—the topseeded R. Laver against C. Drysdale (South Africa) and the second-seeded T. Roche against the 40-year-old R. Gonzales.

Other pairings that promise plenty of action are A. Ashe, the 1968 United States amateur champion, v. the Australian professional, R. A. Emerson, and the fourthseeded J. D. Newcombe (Australia) v. the bearded T. Ulrich (Denmark). Laver barely escaped elimination on Sunday when the Brazilian amateur, T. Koch, held a two-set lead and the Australian staged a remarkable come-back. Yesterday, he was content to take things easily while outclassing the veteran, P. Segura, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. A heavy storm suspended three men’s singles, including that between the American professional, R. D. Ralston, and the Mexican amateur, J. Loyo-Mayo. Loyo-Mayo, a mighty midget, was trying for an upset as he led Ralston, 11-9, 2-6, 6-3, 3-4, when the rains came. The women’s quarter-finals

are: Miss V. Wade (Britain) v. Miss J. M. Tegart (Australia); Mrs A. Jones (Britain) v. Miss P. Bartowicz (United States); Mrs B. J. King (United States) v. Miss M. Goodwin (South Africa); and Mrs M. Court (Australia) v. Miss M. E. Bueno (Brazil).
