FLOODLIT SOCCER

Knock-Out Matches

The first round of the O’Briens $2OO sponsored knock-out soccer tournament will begin at English Park this evening, with matches between Shirley-Nomads and Western (7 p.m.) and Shamrock and New Brighton (8.30 p.m.).

The winners of these matches, and of the clash between Rangers and Christchurch City on Saturday, will join Technical, which has the bye, in the semi-finals on September 11. The tournament will be completed on September 18, when the winning semi-final-ists will meet for the first and second prizes and the losers for the third prize. The S2OO prize money will be divided $lOO for the winner, $75 for the runner-up and $25 for the third-placed team.

The key match this evening will be the renewed rivalry between Brighton, which recently won the southern league, second division, championship and Shamrock. Earlier in the season they met in a much-disputed first division play-off, and Shamrock won, 41.

The early match brings together two clubs who have not played each other this season —Shirley was in the second division, Western in the first
