Full Strength For Cup Final
Technical will be at full strength for its Chatham Cup national final against Eastern Suburbs (Auckland) at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday.
The team, announced by the club’s playercoach and former Scottish amateur international, J. S. Chalmers, is:
I. Marshall: G. Davis, A. Hawthorn: K. France, G. Griffiths, Chalmers; A. Dawe, B. Wilkinson, A. Caine, S. Squire, K. Pahi. Reserves: W. Weir, P. Kay, C. Jones, J. Stevens, P. Hyland. W. Blows.
Although it is only eight years since Technical appeared in the national final, only one of the present squad has previously played in that stage of the competition. Weir was also reserve goalkeeper for Christchurch City in its final against North Shore last year. Chalmers announced, the team after the club’s final training session. The players will have a loosening-up run in Wellington on Friday after travelling on the overnight ferry from Christchurch. Only one of the side—
France—is a current New Zealand international compared with Suburbs’ five—T. McNab, P. Rennell, W. de Graaf, R. Mears and J. Legg. However, Davis was recently added to the World Cup squad, at the same time as Suburbs’ J. Staines. Fourteen of the 17-man squad have played for the Canterbury senior team, and Davis, Hawthorn, Griffiths, Wilkinson, Caine and Squire were in the provincial team that held Cardiff City to a 2-0 victory earlier this season.
The two exceptions are Stevens and Hyland. Stevens was in the Canterbury under--18 team in 1967 and Hyland captained this year’s Junior National Cup side.
