Visit By Indian Clergyman

The Rev. Lalhuala Darlong, a leading Indian Baptist churchman and the general secretary of the Tripura State Baptist Union, will spend two weeks in Christchurch at the beginning of November during a three-month visit to New Zealand. Mr Lalhuala. a member of the Darlong tribe from the State of Tripura, in eastern India, arrived in the North Island a few days ago. He is the first Indian pastor brought to New Zealand by the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society.

He was born in the village of Darchoi and became one of the 12 foundation pupils of St Paul’s School, started by New Zealand missionaries in Agartala, the capital of Tripura.

The Rev. G. F. Coombs, minister of the Opawa Baptist Church, who met Mr Lalhuala during a visit to India last year, said yesterday that he felt Mr Lalhuala had a great deal to offer New Zealanders. As general secretary he was concerned with the total life of the Church, but while in New Zealand he would particularly be interested in teaching people the real work of the mission.
