BRIGHTON TRAFFIC

More Use Of Parks Wanted

Traffic congestion in New Brighton at busy shopping periods would be practically eliminated if the existing offstreet parking was used more, the New Brighton Business Men’s Association and the Christchurch City Council traffic department consider. The president of the association (Mr M. E. Daubney) said yesterday that local businessmen had gone to a lot of trouble and expense to provide off-street parking and signs, but many people still seemed to be unaware of the existence of the parks. There were a number of parking areas In Hawke Street, and it was only a short walk to the main shopping area in Seaview Road, said Mr Daubney. The area could do with more off-street parking but the main concern of the association at present was to get the public to use the existing parking areas. The main job of traffic officers was to keep traffic moving and prevent congestion, but officers did tell motorists where parking was available, said the Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas). Most of the congestion in Seaview Road was caused by slow moving traffic looking for parking places, said Mr Thomas. Double parking was absolutely forbidden.
