Aranui Seeks New Polling Place
Polling booths in the New Brighton Library and in the Linwood Library were too far from Aranui to encourage
senior citizens and women with small children to take advantage of the week’s voting period for the Christchurch City Council in the next local body elections, said the president of the Aranui Progress League (Mr B. J. Corkran) in a statement yesterday. The league sought a weeklong polling place in Breezes Road, he said. I “Because of the lack of this facility in the area it will no doubt be evident after polling day that the city’s dream of a record poll has vanished."
Mr Corkran said the residents of Hampshire Street and the surrounding area, and the local member of Parliament (Mr Mathison) were to be congratulated on the result of their efforts to obtain a post office in Hampshire Street
The post office had filled a much needed want, and it was to be hoped councillors would heed the decision and recognise the need for a polling place in Breezes Road. “It is apparent that no thought has been given to the provision of voting facilities in this area,” he said.
