UNIVERSITY WINS MEN’S HOCKEY

University won its match in the final round of the Taylor Trophy competition to win this trophy and the senior grade championship in the same season. University beat Harewood by a margin of four goals.

University was closely challenged for the championship by High School Old Boys and the verdict depended upon goal averages as University and High School Old Boys were equal on points. University scored 14 goals to 5, and Old Boys 11 to 5. Results were:— University 5, Harewood 1. High School Old Boys 3, Selwyn 1. Hagley Old Boys 4, Linwood Old Boys 0. Woolston 3, Sydenham 1. UNIVERSITY v. HAREWOOD On an excellent surface at Wil. liamson Park, University trapped, passed and dribbled with an authority which overwhelmed Harewood. Outstanding for University were J. H. Christensen and J. Borren in the forward line.

The University defence was solidly based upon good goalkeeping by R. McHarg and the cool, steady play of E. Holstein and C. Ineson. both of whom were most unselfish in their passing.

S. Maister was everywhere at centre-half, cutting off incipient attacks, dribbling out of trouble. sometimes into trouble, but usually giving his forwards a flying start. He was well supported by I. Bishop and G. Chetwin, and T. Crossen made some long dribbles at speed on the left-wing. On the right wing M. Thomson was a constant worry to Harewood. and J. Grainger at centre-< forward made a most useful con., tribution in the absence of B. J. Maister.

For Harewood. A. Chesney was a notable half-back. His stick work against clever opponents was excellent and he made some most constructive passes. He was well supported by G. Haste and D. Shepherd.

S. Cranfield made some fine saves in goal, and D. Stanton in the forwards escaped with the ball more often and further afield than other members of the attack. Goals for University were scored by J. Borren (3) and M. Thomson (2), the latter with good shots from penalty corners. D. Stanton scored for Harewood. Umpires: Messrs D. Holland and E. Ambler. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. SELWYN Although Old Boys strove to achieve sufficient dominance to overtake the University goal average, they met with some effective resistance and were compelled to retire with too modest a margin. Selwyn has been quite inconsistent this sea son. but there was ample determination in its defence and willingness to counter attack.

Old Boys was clearly the stronger team, but inaccuracy at times in the passing amongst the forwards and a tendency to over-dribble enabled the opposing defence to make sue cessfui interceptions and tackles, when such should not have been available.

For Old Boys, A. Paterson was always prominent in the half line, and R. Bailey and T. Wall were forwards who gave ihrust to the attack. S. Palmer. R Best and I. Brown were the best players in the Selwyn team. Umpires: Messrs D. Hormon and R. Nickalls. WOOLSTON v. SYDENHAM Playing as a number of individuals Sydenham never achieved any real combination and Woolston deserved its win because it did move with some fluency at times. Good goalkeeping by A. Harroway, who saved two penalty strokes, was a feature of Woolston's performance, and the team was well served by the efforts of R. Gillespie and C. Cox on defence and N. Hobson and B. Aldridge on attack.

For Sydenham, C. Hall showed some amount of promise on the right-wing in place of C. Nimmo

who was not available. M. Bennett and R. Fergus defended well, and were competently covered by J. Bradford in goal. Umpires; Messrs S. Jessett and P. Chant. HAGLEY OLD BOYS v. LINWOOD OLD BOYS Linwood held its own in the first half by strenuous endeavour and neither team scored. Thereafter Hagley changed gear and immediately exerted a pressure which Linwood could not withstand. K. Thomson prompted and led Hagiey by turn and with decisive example, and both R. Thomson and W. Thomson responded strongly on the right flank.

They were well supported by Paul Clark, and both G. Smith and D. Robertson in rearguard positions defended well and returned the ball to the forwards with unerring accuracy. The efforts of I. Stanton. A. Best ahd M. Read were a substantial contribution to Linwood’s earlier resistance. Umpires: J. Messervy and T. Gilliver.
