Ferry Charges Defended

The charges for car trans-j port on the Picton-Wellington i service were reasonable, and a reduction was not justified, said the Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre), writing for the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon), in a letter received ! by the executive of the South Island Local Bodies’ Associa- : tion.

The letter, in reply to a request from the association for reduced off-peak fares said that all rates now were lower than they were when the Aramoana started the service in 1962. the medium-car charge having been reduced from $l4 to $ll. There was no seasonal pattern, said the Minister, and I if the subject of cheaper off;peak charges was to encourage travel, it was doubtful whether this would be (achieved. There was no sea(sonal decline in traffic, (though some sailings had 1 space available for cars.
