Interest At Wanganui In Guineas Prospects

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NTH. The new season’s ■ three-year-olds will be out in force today but none will attract more attention than Honey Belle, the pre-post favourite for the Wanganui Guineas next week. The Takanini filly is one of 25 second season horses engaged on the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting. She will be ridden by W. D. Skelton in the SlBOO Flying Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Honey Belle is a half-sister to Star Belle, being by Better Honey from Belle Time. She is trained by I. J. Tucker who has her in forward condition. Her stablemate, Superior Star, is to run at Wanganui as well. He is a colt by Test Case from Belle Rosa, the dam of Belle Time. Superior Star will tackle the Intermediate Mile and a good showing there could mean that he will also run in the Guineas. Of the other three-year-olds entered at Wanganui, 11 have been accepted for maiden class. Leading prospects among them are Brazil from Marton and Chi Chi, which is trained at Awapuni. Brazil, second last week at Foxton, has been entered for the Wanganui Guineas.

The most interesting of the

remainder are Royal Tudor, which will run against Superior Star in the Intermediate Mile and the 10 three-year-olds which will clash in the Durie Hack Handicap. Cantostan and Pep are Guineas possibilities in this event, which will be run over a little more than six and a half furlongs. Royal Tudor had 8.8 in the Free Handicap. He carried 8.0 when he won the open sprint at Foxton last weekend and he is up a stone today.

In the Free Handicap, Pep had 8.1 and Cantostan 7.9. Their names came well down the list, but Cantostan had two wins at Riccarton recently and Pep resumed with an encouraging fourth in hack class at Foxton. Of the pair Pep could go further at three years. He is by Fair’s Fair from the imported Conquete and he came rather late on the juvenile scene. Double Picks

Messene and Honey Belle remain in favour for the double and now that Pasa Doble has been scratched, Automaton is given a chance. The track will be firm, although showers are forecast.
