Last Chance For Lawry To Pass 1000 Runs
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON.
The Australian batsmen, W. M. Lawry and K. D. Walters, have their last chance to top the 1000-run mark for the tour at Lord’s against the Rest of the World, starting today.
It is the last match of the Australian tour of Britain.
, Lawry has accumulated 864 runs from 21 innings and needs another 136 to reach the coveted goal.
Walters is better placed with 930 from 30 innings, and needs only 70 runs. Only two of the Australian batsmen so far have achieved the 1000-run mark.
I. R. Redpath leads the tourists with his 1363 from 35 innings, and I. M. Chappell has 1226 runs from 29 innings.
Batsmen who seem certain to miss the 1000-run mark are R. Cowper (744), A. P. Sheahan (809), R. J. Inverarity (634) and L. Joslin (344).
Contract Signed
For some of the Australians this will be a nostalgic last appearance on England’s most famous ground, but for A. N. Connolly it will be only the start of a long association. Connolly has signed a threeyear contract to play for Mid-
diesex in the county championship. Middlesex's home ground is Lord’s a factor that influenced Connolly in his choice in preference to the Oval where the Surrey club was bidding keenly for his signature. Fiery Pitches
The Lord’s pitches have been fiery in recent years—ls wickets fell there in the Middlesex-Kent game—and Connolly believes, as a medium-fast bowler, he will have his best opportunity there.
The Australian team to play the rest of the world is Lawry (captain), Redpath, Cowper or Inverarity, 1. M. Chappell, Walters, Sheahan, B. Taber, N. Hawke, A. Mallett, D. Renneberg and Connolly.
