Girls’ Title Regained By Miss Y. Fogarty
The 1967 Naw Zealand representative, Hiss Y. M. ; Fogarty (Otago) beat the Australian junior champion. Hiss C. Vick 21-12, 21-14 to regain her girls’ undcr-18 singles title, during the final morning. Miss Fogarty won the title in 1966 but was unexpectedly beaten by her sister. Miss M. J. Fogarty, in the final at Wanganui last year. She combined well with Miss C. M. O’Carroll (Northland) to win the under--18 girls* doubles for the third year in succession. Miss M. P. Green (Canterbury) and J. Gerrard (Hawke s Bay) tried hard against Misses Fogarty and OCarroll but they could not match the power of the top seeds. Upset Win A. K. Joe (East Waikato) won the under-18 boys’ singles when he beat D. A. Leong (Wellington) 21-18, 9-21, 21-15. In the final. Joe was seeded only third but beat the top seed. I. J. Weir (Canterbury) in the semi-finals. h Weir and Leong came within
a point of taking the under*lB W* doubles title. They led 20- in the third game against p. G. Couper (Auck.) and Joe, but lost the decider 22-24. Fine Prospect J. Morris (Northland) showed himself to be one of the finest prospects tn New Zealand when he beat the Otago senior repG - J - williams. 2 1‘ 13, ,n the final of the under-16 boys’ singles. Morris’s attack was too much for Williams. who is primarily a dei fensive player. Williams had i won this title in the two previous years. I Miss B. A. Taylor (Canterbury) reached the finals of the under-16 girls’ singles and doubles but lost both. She was beaten by the top seed in the singles. Miss K A.
