CHURCHES’ OFFER

Settlement Of Czechs

Should the situation in Czechoslovakia deteriorate and a mass exodus occur, churches in New Zealand would be prepared to receive large numbers of refugees for settlement. This decision was conveyed to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) last week by the National Council of Churches, according to the council’s resettlement officer (the Rev. R. M. O’Grady). “The council is keeping in touch with the refugee situation by cable and letter,” he said yesterday. “So far, the numbers escaping across the border have not been large, but in case of a sudden increase the World Council of Churches! refugee camps in Austria and Western Germany are on full alert.” Mr O’Grady recalled that at the time of the Hungarian uprising. New Zealand took more than 1000 Hungarian refugees. It would be expected that at least this number of Czechs would be received if the situation warranted it. Those Czechs who had already come to New Zealand as refugees were among the best and most reliable settlers New Zealand had known, he said.
