EVENSONG SERVICE

Music By Local Composers

Representatives of choirs of churches affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, will present a festal evensong in the Christchurch Cathedral on September 5. A feature of the service will be music by Christchurch composers.

Dr Vernon Griffiths has written a setting of the “Magnificat’ ’and “Nunc Dimittis” especially for the service. In addition his anthem “Jesu. grant me this I pray” will be sung.-

The principal anthem was written by Professor John Ritchie when the Queen visited Christchurch in 1955. It is entitled “God Standeth in the congregation of Princes.” The pointing of Psalm 112 has been especially prepared by Mr C. Foster Browne, and will be sung to a chant composed by Stanley Jackson.

The conductor will be Mr Jackson, organist and choirmaster of St Mary’s Church, Karori, Wellington, who is the Wellington diocesan reoresentative of the R.S.C.M. The organist will be Mr Browne, master of the choristers and organist of Christchurch Cathedral.
