Retirement From Army

Lieutenant-Colonel G. J. H. Atkinson has taken up the appointment of Director of Ordnance Services, relinquished by LieutenantColonel J. Harvey, who has retired from the Army after 26 years. Colonel Atkinson was born tn Christchurch and educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School. He joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1944, but transferred to the Army in 1945, He served in Japan from 1946 to 1948, and in Korea, where from 1951 to 1952 he was commander. Royal Army Ordnance Corps, with the Commonwealth Division in the rank of lieutenantcolonel.

Later he held various appointments in the Ordnance Corps. He was Chief Provision Officer with the Ordnance Directorate, Army Headquarters, before being posted to a similar appointment with the New Zealand Defence Liaison Staff, London, in 1965. He has only recently returned to New Zealand.

Colonel Harvey joined the Army in 1942. He served for two years with artillery units before attending the Royal Military College, Duntroon, After graduating as a lieutenant in 1947, he served in Japan. From 1957 until i 960 he served as a company commander with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Infantry Regiment, on anti-terrorist operations in Malaya. He returned to the Ordnance Corps in i 960.

Before his appointment as Director of Ordnance Services in 1967, Colonel Harvey was Chief Provision Officer, Army Headquarters, Wellington.
