Tennis Semi-finalists
Although wot court* preventec play until after 1 p.m. tn th< Anderion and HUI junior hart court tennis tournament a' Wilding Park yesterday, most n th. seml-Anallsts and some final ists had been found by las evening at the end of the sec ond day. Already, M. Morrison and R Tuck have won the under 11 boys’ doubles, and L. Wilsor and C. Newton have won the under 13 girls* doubles. Bott these sections had been playec *s round-robin tournaments be cause of the few entries. After the courts had beer soaked, the manager of the tour nament, Mr S. F. Clarke, and th< groundsman, Mr T. Patterson swept the courts to have then ready for the afternoon. Ever then matches were played Ir miserably cold weather ant players were understandably even more reluctant to umpire than usual. For aU that, there were some Interesting results. After Morrison and Tuck had won their doubles from the twins, R. Webster and I. Webs ter because of steadiness, they were matched in a singles semi final. Tuck la a wonderful re turner with a lot of spin and he got the game going at his 6 ace for leads of 4-0 and 5-1 ut Morrison, serving well but making errors, began to hit harder and he took the first set, ,9-7. They settled down Into a battle of returning with Tuck determined not to give In, although Morrison got a 4-2 lead In the second set. With blackened balls on a dark court in a dim light they played on and bn, and a frozen umpire, N. Dillon, hoping one would appeal against the light. Eventually, Morrison won, 9-7. 8-6, at 5.30 p.m., and they could barely have played longer. R. Webster 1* top seed in the section, Morrison second and Tuck was unseeded. The Websters met In the other semi-final, two very tall lanky players in different -coloured track suits. However. R. Webster justified his place as top junior in the province when he best his brother comfortably, 6-1, 6-2. by better net play and sounder returning. In the semi-finals of the under 17 boys' singles B. Smyth seeded eecond, will meet N. pattinson, the third seed, and L Smith, a Southlander seeded
fourth, will play the winner of an early quarter final today be tween the top-seeded N. Dillon and F. Versteeg. Smyth had the easleM quarter, final yesterday, wfhning by default. but the other two acored well. The under 17 girls’ singles was notable for the defeat of the top seed, K. Davey, the topranked under 17 girl in Canterbury, by R. Smith, who was ranked sixth on the under 15 list. However, after winning the first set 6-0. Miss Davey was troubled by a recurrence of a strained cartilage In a leg. Miss Smith won the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4. The under 15 boys' singles has the first three seeds, T. Mooney, T. Wilson (Southland) and R. Wood (North Otago) in the semifinals, but the fourth. K. Fahy (North Otage) is missing. He was beaten In a long threesetter by the smooth-stroking P. Mitchell, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. A young Southlander. L. Johns, Is playing well In the under 15 girls’ singles. Winner of the under 13 singles and doubles last year, she will be matched against the top-seeded A. Meates today. In the other semi-final, another Southlander, W. McLeay, seeded third, will play the Ellesmere girt, G. Skilling, seeded second. T. de Vries, an unseeded comparatively unknown player, endangered the form in the under 13 boys’ singles when he beat the third-seeded P. Hampton. However, he then lost to the top seed, J. Hampton, In a semifinal. C. Newton and L. Wilson will meet in the under 13 girls* final. Results: UNDER 16 Roys’ Singles Semi-finals.—R. Webster beat I. Webster, 6-1, 6-2; M. Morrison beat R.
