HOCKEY Christchurch
Christchurch B.H.S. won the Rankin Cup when the ball trickled into the Hagley H.S. net 15 seconds before full-time. Christchurch deservedly led 2-0 at half-time and appeared to be set for a comfortable win. But complacency immature tactics, and a determined Hagley eleven brough about a dramatic change.
Christchurch dominated the first half and was unlucky not to lead by more than the two goals scored by R. Mcllroy. He was greatly assisted by C. Maister, who dribbled skilfully and passed with good judgment, and A. Ineson, at centre-half. After the interval Christchurch attempted to confine play to the right flank but its methods simply allowed Hagley to gain good possession. Hagley, ably led by I. Jackson, snatched two goals to equalise before Christchurch .scored its last fortuitous goal. M. Gaskell played well at lefthalf for Hagley and had good support from the rest of the team. Jackson dribbled elusively to score one goal and gain a penalty stroke from which J. Bailey scored.

secondary schools tournament. After torrential rain, the game was postponed until most of the surface water had disappeared and for the first 15 minutes the surface was reasonably smooth. During this period Linwood was constantly on attack and D. Small scored a fine goal from close quarters. But as the surface deteriorated so did Linwood’s confidence gradually fall away. Auckland began to attack with long hits down the centre and one of these led to a penalty corner and the equalising goal. In the second half the Auckland attacks increased in ferocity, its fast forwards thriving on the sticky conditions. Goals were added from a melee in front of goal and again from a penalty corner.
