Town Milk Industry
Sir, The recently - announced reduction (third year in succession), together with an unlikely retrospective payment next year, threaten the livelihood of our town milk producers. Unable to cut costs such as wages, petrol, rates, veterinary expenses, etc. (most at increased rates) the suppliers will have their net income cut by up to half. A producer working 60 to 70 hours weekly, public holidays included, and having $40,000 invested in his farm will have an unrealistic income of $2OOO to $3OOO. Because of his guarantee, he is unable to change to beef, sheep, or cropping, to recover lost income. In the meantime, unions have blackmailed the Government into granting the wage-earner an increase. I suggest that our representatives take immediate steps to meet the Government, and have the decision revoked, to give the suppliers an increase equivalent to the recent wage order.—Yours, etc.. ACTION. August 20, 1968.
