CHINA AND U.N.
Synod Wants Admission
The admission of China to the United Nations was advocated by the North Canterbury district of the Methodist Church at its annual synod yesterday.
Keeping China out of the United Nations was “one of the most gigantic mistakes of
our generation,” said the Rev. W. S. Dawson. He said that communism had been able to set the country on its feet again.
“Taken all in all, because the Western nations were unable or unwilling to do the job, God raised up another means of restoring that country.” Many things could be said against the Chinese form of communism, but every opportunity to make China part of the brotherhood of nations should be taken. The President of the Methodist Church in New Zealand (the Rev. J. D. Grocott) said that the unrealistic thinking of those who opposed forming better relations with China amazed him. “It is unrealistic to think that we can keep these people outside the United Nations and at the same time expect them to conform to what we want,” said Mr Grocott. The synod recommended that the Church conference in November ask the Government to explore with urgency anything that could facilitate the entry of China to the United Nations.
