STRIKES WIDEN
Wage Order Dispute
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. Fresh strikes by workers wanting a wider application of the Arbitration Court’s 5 per cent general wage order today brought the number of strikers to 707 in Auckland.
Their actions are affecting such engineering contracts as the Tongariro power project, the Kapuni gas pipe line, a Wairakei geothermal project and the extensions to the Auckland Harbour bridge. The Metal Trades Employers’ Association met this morning at the Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association offices to discuss “the worsening situation.”
Afterwards a spokesman for the association said the effects of 'the strikes were "very serious.” The strikers want the 5 per cent paid without ceilings. The association has said that it will pay only on the first $4O of an adult male worker’s wage—in terms of the order.
