Rule Changes In Water Polo
There are likely to be several far-reaching changes to the rules of water polo after the Olympic Games, according to the secretary of the New Zealand Water Polo Board (Mr D. F. Stewart).
‘‘Pressure from European countries seems sure to abolish the penalty points method of registering major fouls and to increase the time of each quarter of play from five minutes actual play to six or seven minutes,” Mr Stewart said yesterday. The effect of cancelling the penalty point provisions would mean a return to the former ordering from the water of players who commit major fouls. However, it seems as though such players would probably be permitted to return to the water after one or two minutes play rather than waiting until a goal is scored. Another possible alteration will allow any player to take a free throw, and not necessarily the person nearest to the point at which the foul occurred.
